4 cartoons I will not allow my children to watch

Great to see you again!! Y'all don't forget to fan me on Facebook, and subscribe to my Examiner articles!
There is really no rhyme or reason to why I won’t allow my children to watch these cartoons; they are educational and kids generally seem to enjoy them. But, there are limits to what I will allow to creep into my brain and fester. So, without further ado, here they are:
- Caillou–this sets my kids up for disappointment, as his parents are always happy and congenial, and well, I’m not. A typical scenario on the show: ”Oh, Caillou, you broke Mommy’s favorite dish? That’s ok. That’s why we tell you to be careful and not run in the house.” Vs. a typical scenario at our house: *Crash!* “WHAT WAS THAT?!?!! I TOLD YOU NOT TO RUN! LOOK WHAT YOU DID! TIME OUT NOW!” I am working on this…but I may never get to the level of Calm that Caillou’s parents portray and I don’t want my kids to be disappointed.
- Barney–I had to watch this on a loop from the time I was 9 until my little brother grew out of it. I’d say 5 years was enough torture. I still remember the words to the songs. Enough said.
- Dora–At first, I liked her. I let my kids watch the show for a good two years. Then my brother told me that the point of the show was not to teach diversity and another language like I had thought, but was created as a marketing ploy to sell Dora items. And seeing how many Dora items there are in stores…I am inclined to believe him. So we cooled it on Dora for a bit.
- Yo Gabba Gabba–It’s creepy. And no matter how often they sing about a “Party in my tummy” my kids still won’t eat vegetables.
What shows have you nixed from your children’s viewing schedule?

When my daughter was small I had to nix Scooby Doo from her tv viewing because it gave her nightmares. I also had to throw away her Care Bears 2 VHS movie and pretend we lost it because she became so obsessed with the villain Dark Heart that she wanted to watch it repeatedly all day long even though we had a cabinet full of other animated cartoon movies to choose from.

Scooby Doo gave her nightmares? Poor thing! I never thought of the Doo as scary, but then again I watched it as an older kid. And I have conveniently “misplaced” countless items…such as this little gingerbread man who sings “Jingle Bell Rock”…I sure haven’t missed him!!!
I hated Caillou for the same reasons. I also personally hold this show responsible for my son being so sensitive. I know that sounds horrible but Caillou was such a whiner, and his parents coddled him. I couldn’t take it anymore. As for Dora–isn’t that the goal of EVERY kid’s show?

About Dora–I’m sure it is, but I haven’t seen it quite as much with some of the other shows the kids love. I haven’t seen a Max & Ruby toothbrush, or Imagination Movers backpack. Maybe I don’t get out enough. It just got to the point that I was seeing Dora everywhere, and it got annoying. And, for what it is worth, I think things like the Mickey Choo Choo Express toy are just ridiculous.
I’m glad I nipped the Caillou viewing in the bud. Whining drives me nuts, and my kids do enough of it without Caillou’s influence.

I have said that my children WILL NOT watch Barney. I don’t care who buys them DVDs I won’t play them at our house. My sis in law, who is not 17, watched it constantly…. ARGGGGGGGG I can’t stand to hear “I love you, you love me….”

I don’t put on DVDs of the shows I dislike, either. Just hearing the theme song to Barney gives me the heebie-jeebies. The only exception to the DVDs around our house is Dora. We have the Christmas DVD and we used to have the Saves the Snow Princess DVD. But, like half the movies we own, something has happened to it, and it disappeared into a Black Hole.
Remember? Scooby and friends are always investigating something that is haunted? That’s the part that would give her nightmares.
I am so with you on number 1,2 and 4.
Calliou is winey uuugh, They never even saw Barney (or the wiggles) b/c my husband and I would have gagged and wtheck is Yo Gabba Gabba – is it like tripping for kids??
They only just recently have been allowed outside of Noggin – we liked most of their shows – to bad 64 zoo lane went away, that was a nice show also we have the dvd’s of bing and bong from the UK, love them and our all time fav is Little Bear!!
